In this weeks map posts is about the list of Division 1 schools here in the United states. Now when people say Division 1 or Division 2 and so on, that is referring to the level of competition athletically. Division 1 is the highest level of athletic competition in America. There are differences in Division 1, because you have class a which are your big time schools such as USC, UNC-Chapel Hill, Florida State, Texas, and Ohio State and so on. You also have Division 1 aa, which are schools like, Gardner Webb University, North Dakota State, James Madison University, Southern Alabama. From this map you can see that majority of the Division 1 teams are in the central and the east coast. The schools out west are only like the big schools like Oregon, Oregon State, Boise State, Montana, Air Force, Nebraska(mid west) Wyoming, Hawaii, University of Alaska at Anchorage, New Mexico.
This Map here shows us the different theme parks here in the united states. In North America, they are over 400 theme park attractions, and off the topic, there are over 300 theme parks in Europe but that’s neither here nor there. Disneyland park has continuously been ranked the best theme park in the United States, probably because its in the state of California and most people, maybe not all, but most people think California when the word “Disney” is brought up. California is a state that a lot of people love, because of the scenery with the beaches and the mountains, and Hollywood, and the bay area. Disneyland is in California which is also the state where Walt Disney himself lived. Other prominent parks across the U.S is Disney world which is in Florida, and you have the six flags theme parks. As you can see that Alaska and Hawaii each have a few theme parks of their own. From coasts to coasts you can see that the east coast by far has more theme parks than the west coast. I mean grant it that California takes up half of the west coast. By the looks of this map. Now some of you maybe wondering where are the pictures of Universal Studios in North Hollywood and Orlando. Now those are also theme parks but they just aren’t shown on this map.

Food in geography is something people talk about even though one may not notice that they categorize foods with the different regions of this country. Living in the south(even though I’m from the west coast) its all about the BBQ, seafood and what some call soul food. The South is all about their sweets too! the cakes such as lemon pound cake, chocolate cake etc. and the pies like Pecan pie, Sweet potato, Apple pie, etc. BBQ steak, chicken, ribs, is another food that rules the south and also fried foods rule this area, which also speaks on the health issues like high blood pressure and high or low sugar, but that’s another topic for another day. The south has Bojangles in which everyone goes too every morning and every night for that chicken and those buttermilk biscuits they have. Up North you have your hoagies or subs like we say out west and here in the south. Pennsylvania is known strictly for Hershey’s and those Philly cheese steaks subs they have in Philadelphia. In New York you KNOW, that’s one of the states you have to go to try deep dish pizza! that is an absolute must to go try, however…. and I mean however….New York is known for their New York ballpark franks hot dog! when you go to Yankees games, you don’t get candy, you don’t get a hamburger, you don’t even get dippin dots! when the vendors come to your row at Yankee stadium or Citi Field (don’t want to leave any of you Mets fans out of the dry) and they say “hot dogs here” “get ya hot dogs here” in that New York City accent, you have to go ahead and get your money out and you order your self a Ballpark franks hot dog. When you have completed that tasks! then you have had the complete New York City experience. We all love donuts! now if you want some Dunkin Donuts! you go to Massachusetts. Now I know us who live in the south, especially here in North Carolina, we know Krispy Kreme is what rules all donuts, but that neither here nor there. You have your hamburgers that rule all of Connecticut. The West coast is known for the the Mexican food! all the quesadillas, enchiladas, Tacos, from restaurants like el pollo loco! you have your coffee in the north west in Washington. Geography as far as food has always been a thing, especially for those of us who have moved from place to place. have experienced different foods from different regions of the U.S.
Major League baseball is America’s pastime. Its one of the greatest sports here in the United States, and world wide. People never really think of baseball in a climatic way, some people don’t pay close attention to how important climate actually is when it comes to baseball. Over the past few years, more and more home runs have been hit throughout the league. By June in 2017, players had hit more than 1100 home runs, and this was before the all-star break, and the league was on its way to breaking the record of most home runs hit in a season. The record was broken when Alex Gordon of the Kansas city Royals hit a home run to set the record of 5694 which broke the record of 5693 set in 2000. Now the question that people would ask would be why are there so many home runs being hit? The steroid era is over, or as far as we know its over. Yes the players are bigger, faster, and stronger, no one is using a corked bat like Sammy Sosa did in 2003. Climate! Climate is a big reason why more home run are being hit. In the last couple years globally, the temperature has started to rise, summer are hotter, winters are warmer in some parts of the world. Another question is posed and this question is that, does humidity play a roll in how far a baseball is hit? the more humid it is outside, means the more water molecules in the air. The water molecules increase the amount of nitrogen and oxygen in the air,while also decreasing the air density which allows for the ball to carry further and further. Baseballs are made of yarn too so with it absorbing more water helps with the distance of the ball being hit. So the heavier the ball is, the further it’ll travel. In 2017 with the humidity being higher than usual, 2 players hit over 50 home runs, in those players were Giancarlo Stanton then of the Miami Marlins, and Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees. Stanton played in Miami, which is known for having that Florida heat and humidity! To branch off a bit from humidity, there have also been a lot of postponed baseball games. With the Rain, snow, ice etc, by the end of april there were 28 postponed games because of precipitation. Teams such as the Marlins, Mariners, Astros, Brewers, Blue Jays, and the Diamondbacks have resorted to retractable roofs. The Tampa Rays still play in a dome. Teams should resort to using retractable roofs because they allow you to play in extreme weathers. You’ll be dry from the precipitation, and comfortable if its cold or extremely hot outside like it gets in Phoenix. Altitude also plays a big role. The Colorado Rockies play in Denver which is high in altitude. High altitude causes less air density, which has an influence on how far the ball will fly. The air is less dense at Coors Field sitting at 5200 feet above sea level.
Hello my fellow viewers, every Monday, I will share a series of maps, these will show the geographical aspects of North America. They will cover, cultural geography, maybe some cartography as well as the physical geography. This map here shows the physical geography MLB (Major League Baseball). [You can see here where certain parts of the states and the far north which teams they root for.] Here in NC, you’re most likely an Atlanta Braves, or Nationals fan. You can see with this map, that the Atlanta Braves, Cardinals, and the Rangers, control some of the bigger fan bases in the south and central parts of North America. For baseball, geography plays a key role. The South is represented by the Braves, Astros, Rangers, Cardinals, Rays, and Marlins. The Braves and Rangers fans, control a lot of the south, they control a lot of the regions and mainly the Braves because they were really the team of the 90’s, not necessarily because they won a lot of championships but because of the fact that they won bunch of Division titles and would go to the NLCS quite often, they won lots of the southern fans over. As you see in the north, there are plenty of teams to pull for. Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Pirates, orioles and Nationals. The central part of the U.S has a lot of teams also so its mainly the regions you stay in, and which team is closer to where you live, is the teams you’ll root for. Out West there are only a few teams, LA has basically two teams with the LA Dodgers, and the LA Angels of Anaheim. Then you have the two teams in the bay area with the Giants and Athletics, the Padres in San Diego, and the the Mariners in the North West. The Diamondbacks of Arizona and the Rockies basically control their states but other than that, there isn’t a big fan showing in the other mid west states like, Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, The Dakota’s Montana and so on.
